Here at Paws Across Baton Rouge we believe in a No-Kill Ethic. This means that ALL adoptable animals are rescued, fostered and adopted into forever homes. Not everyone can be on the Front Lines of the fight for a No-Kill city but there's alot of ways you can help right from home! Here are some ideas:
1. ADOPT, don't shop!
There is no good reason to continue to buy from a breeder or a pet shop when looking for a new family pet. By doing so, you are only encouraging the proliferation of an overburdened shelter system and therefore the deaths of many animals deserving of love and affection whose only crime was being born unwanted. There is no shortage of wonderful pets ready to give you the same love and affection as a "pedigreed" dog. And, face it, unless you're planning to show the pet at Westminster, why exactly are you paying for the pedigree? Our local shelters and rescues have the breed you're looking for without a doubt! And, mixed breeds make great pets too--many of them are not subject to the hereditary illnesses that may arise out of continued inbreeding but can have the "best qualities" of each breed in its family!
2. Spay and Neuter Your Pet
The odds of you finding 4-9 "forever" homes that will keep the pet for a lifetime are pretty slim. Don't feed into the pet overpopulation problem. If money is a factor, please tell your vet or contact any of our rescues on our Rescues page--they can steer you in the right direction to get financial help for spaying! Better yet--ADOPT your animal--they come spayed or neutered already!
3. Promote adoption and fostering.
Please check out our Fostering page and print out any of the fliers you see there to promote fostering. As we progress, we will be adding more everyday and you can lobby for the Rescue organization you want to support! Hand them out and hang them up where ever you can! At your office, at your church, at your next yard sale, anything!
4. Write your representatives and parish council members
Our government works for YOU, taxpayer! There is no better way to get our officials to act than to show them their voters want something and that their continued opportunity to stay in office depends on pleasing their constituency. If you need help getting started, we can provide draft letters that you can individually tailor.
PLEASE, do not ever hesitate to contact us here at Paws Across Baton Rouge! If you want to help in any way, we can find a way to help you do that! Please see our Contact Form on the Home Page.
