Hurricane Season's official start in Louisiana is June 1, 2012. Are you prepared? Are your pets?

Although every early summer, I get our hurricane kits together and make sure everything is current, it's not a bad idea in the South to have a go-kit in place all year round. Because of our warm weather, our proximity to water, and our frequent storms, you never know when you might need to be prepared for a situation with flooding or no electric.
Your pets have some of the same emergency needs as you, but they need some extra help since they can't pack for themselves. Here are some suggestions, tips and a list of supplies:

FOOD: Enough for meals for at least 3-7 days. Keep in a waterproof container. Don't forget the can opener.

WATER
: At least a half-gallon for each pet per day. This should be more than enough but better safe than sorry!

PRESCRIPTIONS
:  An extra supply of any prescriptions your dog may be on, enough for 3 to 7 days. Also, a copy of any written prescriptions in case you need a refill at a different pharmacy.

EMERGENCY/FIRST AID
:  You can share your own First Aid Kit with your pets. Just make sure that you have enough supplies to cover all of you. Remember, Neosporin is safe for dogs and cats and so is benadryl in most cases for dogs (not cats).  Benadryl will also keep alot of pets mildly sedated which may be very useful in a stressful situation such as a major storm and/or evacuation. ALWAYS CONSULT WITH A VET ABOUT DOSAGE AND SAFETY BEFOREHAND. (**chlortrimetron is being reported as safe for cats--but again, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET***)

VACCINATION RECORDS/TAGS
: Always keep an extra copy of your pets' vaccine records with you, especially if you're having to travel. If their tags are not on for some reason, please keep them on YOU for quick production to any law enforcement body.

A PICTURE OF YOU AND YOUR PET TOGETHER
: In case your pet gets lost you will want to have proof he or she is yours should you need to pick up from a municipal shelter/emergency shelter. My vet now does ID cards with their pix and vaccine info on them--ask if YOUR vet does these!

TRASH BAGS AND POTTIE PADS (litter and pan for cats)

A LEASH AND COLLAR FOR EACH PET

MUZZLE

A CARRIER FOR EACH PET
(if it will feasibly fit in your auto. I know we don't ALL keep our biggie dogs in carriers all the time if we don't have an SUV. If not, find a way to secure your pet--our leashes can be tied to 'hooks' meant for car seat tie downs behind our back seat headrests).

INFORMATION SHEET WITH EMERGENCY VET INFO, PET FRIENDLY HOTELS, ETC ON YOUR EVACUATION ROUTE

We sincerely hope that none of us will have to use any of the above. But, if Katrina taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected and to be prepared ON BEHALF OF OUR PETS. Please remember to keep EVERYTHING in waterproof containers, ziploc bags, etc. There's nothing worse than a list of contacts and phone numbers that we can't read anymore! Do not rely on your cell phone directory--cell towers may be down and you may have no way to charge your phone until getting to your safe destination.

In our house, I think we celebrate National Eat What You Want Day probably once a week. I can't imagine going an entire year and only eating what I wanted for ONE day. Life's too short! 'Course, this might be a good reason why I'll never be in a SIze 6.

My dogs do not get to eat whatever they want--if they did, I'd have to get a second job to pay for the vet visits. Admittedly, however, they do get their fair share of tater tots, apples, strawberries, homemade dog treats, pizza crust and I even have one coworker who has evidently taken pity on them since I'm a Vegan and sends chicken and steak home with me for surprises. Sometimes I stop at WFM for lunch or groceries and pick stuff up for the dogs off the salad bar--other of my coworkers (obviously not the Meat Bandit) then like to say, "Isn't human food bad for dogs??"

WHAT??!! HAVE YOU SEEN the list of ingredients on a bag of dog food? Is there anyone who can honestly say with a straight face that tomatoes, strawberries and a few corn chips are WORSE than a bag of food who's first 4 ingredients are ground flours and have chemical dyes? That's not to say that my dogs don't eat dog food--of course they do--and I will admit that I'm a dog food snob. I'm simply making a point that, as with most of mainstream America, our big companies have done a miraculous job of brainwashing the public into thinking sawdust with meat flavor is MORE healthy than ACTUAL meat and vegetables for our canine friends.

So, I analyze and study every dog food on a continual basis to make sure I'm doing my very best to provide them with a healthy food, but I will be the first to say that I freely "supplement", which may be why Frankie starts behaving everytime I start dinner. My dogs enjoy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and those on the safe list that YOUR dog will probably love too are:

Tomatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Berries of all kinds, Nuts (NOT macadamias though), Zucchini, COOKED white potatoes, Sweet Green Peas, Cherries, Cranberries, Bananas, Oranges, Rice (although in small amounts to avoid "binding" and causing constipation), Plain Yogurt, and Carrots.

What's YOUR dogs' favorite human treats!!??

Welcome to the world, little puppies!
We are so happy that your momma was found and rescued in time to make sure you came into the world healthy and safe and get to spend all your weaning time nursing with your mom. A foster is taking care of you right now, giving you their all, so that you will have a real opportunity at a happy forever home where you will be so loved.

Gracey was in the shelter, very dirty and very alone and very pregnant. In fact, she was scheduled to be euthanized, along with her puppies, just a week ago. A very nice rescuer from Peaceful Pit Bull Rescue put out the call for fosters and Stephanie, Gracey's "mom" and her husband answered the plea. They took this sweetheart home, and bathed her--she was covered in fleas and ticks. There she got food and water, a blanket and a space all her own. It was JUST IN TIME!!!! Gracey went into delivery overnight and had 9 live puppies, all pictured above, by morning. She will spend her first Mother's Day nursing and she and her babies will all be warm and safe!  Foster Mom and Dad say she is doing a great job!

Stay tuned to this page for Gracey and family's updates as the puppies grow and Mom and babies are put into loving forever homes!

And, a special Thank You to Stephanie and Family--without fostering and rescues, Gracey would have never known a caring, loving home to call hers and a safe place to give birth! If you've never experienced the joy of rescuing an animal in need and giving it a second chance at life, PLEASE reconsider doing so! There are many rescues on our resource tab that would be thankful to welcome you!

If you can spare a few dollars or a few dimes--anything helps! It costs about $50 per puppy to "vet" them, ie vaccines, Spay/Neuter, etc to make sure they're healthy before they go into a forever home. Please help if you can!
